ONE OF THE BIGGEST SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS IN CANADA MAY BE BANNED SOON

If you are actively on the internet, you've probably heard of the app called TikTok, and chances are you or someone you know already has an account! Well, we got some bad news if you are a TikTok lover. The app might be gone, and forever!

American politicians have accused the social media app of being a threat to national security because of its ties to China.

Rumors of a TikTok ban in Canada and the U.S. are spreading after lawmakers proposed a bill to ban the app.

The popular platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance is often accused of threatening national security.

The Canadian Liberal government is "closely monitoring" bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Congress seeking to prohibit TikTok from operating in the United States.

TikTok has already been banned on military devices by the U.S. armed forces, and the U.S. Senate recently approved legislation prohibiting federal employees from using TikTok on government-owned devices.

As a result, it is very possible that the ban will also apply to the general public soon.

"We are closely monitoring developments in the United States regarding TikTok, including the new bill"

-Laurie Bouchard, spokesperson for Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

"Protecting the privacy of Canadians, including their data, is a responsibility that our government takes very seriously,"

-Bouchard in an emailed statement.

She said that under the Investment Canada Act, the establishment of new businesses by foreign companies is "reviewed carefully by our officials to ensure that Canada's economic and national security is protected."

Here's what's happening: Essentially, the U.S. wants to ban Tiktok over security concerns, and Canada wants to follow and is currently closely monitoring the whole situation. If Tiktok gets banned in the United States, it's likely Canada will follow.

"We're watching what the Americans are doing, and we're going to continue to make sure that Canadians are safe,"

-Justin Trudeau stated

26% of Canadian adults use TikTok, and the concerns of the app feeding personal information to the Chinese government has recently been an issue. "TikTok is digital fentanyl that's addicting Americans, collecting troves of their data, and censoring their news."

"Protecting the privacy of Canadians, including their data, is a responsibility that our government takes very seriously."

"We will never hesitate to take action to protect Canadians' interests."

-Laurie Bouchard, spokesperson for Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne.
