QUEBEC PREMIER SAYS IT'S DIFFICULT TO LIVE IN QUEBEC WHEN YOU ONLY MAKE $18 AN HOUR

BY MICHAEL HURLEY
Last Thursday, François Legault stated that $18 an hour is not enough to properly get by in Quebec, especially if you have children. It came as a response during an exchange in the House with the Québec Solidaire (QS) parliamentary leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, after the leader of QS demanded an increase to the minimum wage from $14.25 an hour to $18 an hour.

" it's difficult to get by on $18 an hour, especially when you have children. "

Despite this, François Legault refused the idea of increasing the minimum wage. Choosing another approach, the CAQ intends to increase the average salary of Quebecers. Legault claims that the minimum wage shouldn't exceed 50% of the average wage, or the effects would be more harmful than positive.

" We want people who earn $25 an hour, which is the average in Quebec, to go up to $26, $27, $28. That's our goal. We have much more ambition than QS,

Later during an interview, the QS leader said the admission was "shocking" and "very revealing."

" What François Legault acknowledged today is that he is very aware that these 800,000 people are not able to make it and that he is choosing not to change anything about this situation. He chooses to keep the minimum wage at a level that doesn't even allow them to live in dignity. It's a choice that he makes consciously. "
