QUEBEC GOVERNMENT WORKING ON ONLY ALLOWING FRENCH-SPEAKING IMMIGRANTS

BY MICHAEL HURLEY
Concerned about the decline of French in Quebec, specifically in Montreal, Quebec Premier Francois Legault has proposed a plan; to bar all non-french speaking economic immigrants.

A recent speech by the Premier detailed his priorities for his second term which included a plan to bar most, if not all, economic immigrants who do not speak French by 2026.

« The objective is to stop the decline of French, in particular in Montreal, and to reverse the trend. »

-Quebec Premier François Legault

This plan would only target economic immigrants and not refugees or people entering Quebec on temporary work visas. Currently, the amount of economic immigrants selected by the government is just about 50%. Additionally, the amount of employees within the province using French primarily at work is about 80% contrary to Montreal which sits at about 70%. These are numbers the CAQ is hoping to increase over the next term.
